Purpavitae continues, in modern times, to be a contentious site for the devil. It is in close proximity to a number of gospel church choirs, and their pastors with the strong cadence and tone in their preaching. It was not always thus. Before World War I, demons in charge of California wildfire activity would carry their firey brands from hell through this entrance. During these modern Sundays, though, the devil will often use this entrance as his retreat from the holy call to worship.
To complete the fireplace motif, the tunnel to the underworld is lined with irridescent tile. The grout is scrubbed every Thursday, by those who didn't brush their teeth in life, in preparation for the Friday and Saturday night risings.
